Key Fob Programming: what to note first
Locksmith · Markham, Ontario

The car changed hands last week, and the paperwork included exactly one fob for a household with two drivers. Somewhere in a previous owner's kitchen drawer sits a second one that never made the trip, and neither person has any way to reach it now.
Worth answering before the call
What is your vehicle's year, make and model? Is any fob genuinely lost, or just misplaced at home? Has any fob been dropped, cracked or gotten wet recently?
If I lose a fob, will whoever finds it still be able to use my car?
Yes, until that fob's electronic authorization is specifically removed following that vehicle's procedure, which is why reporting a lost fob matters even when a spare already covers the gap at home. On many vehicles the removal touches only that one fob and leaves the rest working as before; on others every credential is relearned as part of the same procedure. A mechanical blade built into the lost fob can still open an unchanged door lock until that lock is separately rekeyed.
Can you program a fob for a new driver without touching the fobs we already use?
Yes. Adding a fob for another driver joins it to the vehicle's accepted list alongside the fobs already there, and on many vehicles the ones already in daily use are not re-registered or disturbed in the process, though some procedures need every fob present and re-registered together. Each fob keeps its own identity in the vehicle's memory even though they all operate the same doors and engine.
